1930–1939

Humble beginnings in the midst of the worst economic collapse in our nation's history don't deter W.W. Estes. During the 1930s, the business evolves from a one-man operation into a bona fide company that begins to enjoy modest, but growing prosperity.

1931

The Birth of Estes LTL
The first in his family to leave the farm for a business career, Webb Wallace Estes buys a used Chevrolet truck and begins hauling primarily farm products. He uses a window sash for the windshield and an upturned banana crate for the driver's seat.

1933

First Home Office in Chase City, VA
The first home base for the fledgling company is located on Main Street right in the heart of downtown Chase City.

1935

1935 Motor Carrier Act
The Interstate Commerce Commission imposes federal regulation on U.S. trucking companies when they pass the Motor Carrier Act of 1935. With no interstate activity at that time, Estes remains unaffected until 1937 when Virginia passes similar regulations requiring "authority" for intrastate trucking.

1937

Estes Express Lines' Official Name
The company is officially christened Estes Express Lines to comply with new state and federal legislation regulating intrastate trucking.

1938

Branch Terminals in Richmond and Norfolk, VA
The company begins to expand and enjoys a little prosperity as the country pulls out of the Depression years. Estes adds branch terminals in Richmond and Norfolk, VA, and begins building a new Chase City home office.
